Weeks away? Or, days?

We're getting pretty freakin' close. At our Doc appt. yesterday, Doctor says..."See you at your appointment next week. Or, maybe sooner!"

I think Shaundar's hit nesting. She's made a big list of things that need to be done. And, she gets upset every time she looks at it over the things that aren't done yet (like refinance the house).

Everyone tells me that we should enjoy this time without him here. Get sleep, go to the movies, get sleep, play video games, sleep, etc. But...after 9 months and with a very uncomfortable and cranky wife, I am ready to have this over with. I think Shaundar is ready to be done being pregnant, but I don't think she feels as ready as I do for Starbuck's arrival.

His due date is just over a week away. But, he's full term and Shaundar is starting to experience some symptoms of upcoming labor. No strong contractions, yet, however. So...could be this weekend, could be in 3 weeks. Any day now. I hate any day now. I want to know exactly when things are going to happen. Babies are annoying.

Things I can't wait to say

So...I've been practicing some lines that my dad used to use on my when I was a kid. I'm anxious to use them on Desmond. I've been practicing on Shaundar.

Things like:

He'll say: "I'm hungry."
And, I'll say: "Hi Hungry...I'm dad."

He'll say: "See you later."
And, I'll say: "Not if I see you first."

Then there is my personal favorite:
He'll say: "My (insert body part here) hurts."
And, I'll say: "Does your face hurt?"

I am curious how long it will take Desmond to figure out that the appropriate response to my lines is "Der her."

When I'm a dad, I promise not to...

Have a bunch of babies with my mistress.

Sir Michael Gambon is a busy man. The 68-year-old, known to many of us as Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series is about to have his second baby…with his mistress.

Sir Michael has been married to Lady Anne, a retired mathematician, for 45 years. They have a 44-year-old son together, and share a home near London.

The mistress is 43-year-old Philippa Hart, who shares a 17-month-old son with the actor. Philippa reportedly wanted to have a sibling for their son, and so chose to get pregnant again by Sir Michael.

A friend of Sir Michael’s said, “Michael and Philippa are delighted that she’s pregnant again, but he is very worried about what his wife thinks of all this.

“He says it will cause him a lot of hassle if it comes out, but his private arrangements are so complicated he can’t really expect a completely smooth ride.

“He continues to see his wife and mistress, but is very secretive about both relationships. He may be getting on, but Michael is still a wizard with the ladies.”

Lady Anne is reportedly taking the news “in stride.”

I mean...what? Seriously? Lady Anne is taking the news "in stride?" Is the guy so great in bed that all this is simply taken "in stride." What? Flabbergastment abounds.

A Sea of Crankiness

So...everyone in the house is cranky, right now.

Shaundar is cranky because she's 9 months pregnant and probably has a least 2 weeks left.

I'm cranky because Shaundar is cranky and can't go a day without chewing me out for every little thing (yesterday it was for going 38 mph in a 35).

Quincy is cranky because he's already not getting as much lovin' as typical.

Satchmo is cranky because that's just her style.

Shaundar isn't getting much sleep because she needs to get up every 30-45 minutes to pee or eat. I'm usually also awake, trying very hard not to be, with little success. I just keep telling myself...in a few more weeks, the baby will be out and we'll be able to sleep, again. I'm sure the crankiness will subside all around, at that point.

That's how it works, right?

The Labor Playlist

The Baby prep suggestions, this week,include preparing music for the labor period.

Shaundar will be preparing this playlist, of course. But, I think I will sneak one in to play right as the pushing starts.

Honeydew this, honeydew that. Honeydew I need to smack you upside the head?

I told Shaundar that our baby is the size of a Honeydew melon. She promptly said, "I like Honeydew."

I guess we're off to a good start.

On September 27, Meghan gave birth to little Matilda, pictured here. We're already discussing dowry for when Tilly and Desmond get married.

I'm going to need a new title.

Obviously, when I created this site, I wasn't being very forward thinking. I am only a Dad2Be for about 9 months. In 5 1/2 weeks (give or take a couple), I am going 2Be a Dad. I figure, being a new parent, there will still be plenty to blog about (diapers, feeding, dating), but it won't make much sense with the current title.

When Starbuck is born, I figure I will keep this site as a site to continue blogging. I'm also going to start up another site for pictures, as I think blogger kind of sucks for posting pictures. MSN Spaces is WAY better. But, since this one is here, I'll keep it going. What it will need, though, is a new name.

Suggestions?

Rockin' Baby Shower

Michelle threw a baby shower for us this past weekend. This one was for friends in the area.

I'll tell you...I typically don't like baby showers. Even knowing that these are being thrown for us, I still dread sitting there while people watch us open presents and play stupid shower games. The one in Arizona was cool because it involved family who we don't get to see very often, and a swimming pool.

I was really nervous about the one up here. Shaundar insisted that it be co-ed. Seriously...we had a fight about it. My thought was, guys do NOT like baby showers. I don't think I'm alone here, am I, gentlemen? I could just imagine a bunch of my local buddies being forced by their wives to come over to my house and sit there and sip tea while the women giggle and rub Shaundar's belly.

But, it worked out. Props to Michelle. First of all, there was an abundance of beer. Comment of the night from my may, Galloway..."I have never been drunk at a baby shower."

Next...we had Rock Band fired up, upstairs. When you got bored with all the estrogen, you hiked the steps and sang some Pinball Wizard or War Pigs! We even saw some of the women up there at times.

I do feel slightly bad that I missed the opening of the presents. I was rocking out upstairs. But, we totally scored, too. People stepped up. Baby crap is expensive. Between our families (especially my folks who have probably already spent $1000...not surprising as my mom has been waiting for this since 1980), Shaundar's work and our friends...we have gotten almost all of our big ticket items. There are only a couple triple digit items left on our registry. I am actually quite shocked. So, thanks to everyone!

Michelle had her camera out, so I'll have to snag some photos from her. I didn't get any. As soon as I mooch them off her, I'll post some.

Cracklin' Oat Bran

I should really buy stock.

I don't know if it would be called one of the "cravings" or what. But, man, has Shaundar been going through the Cracklin' Oat Bran.

Every morning...Cracklin' Oat Bran for breakfast.
Hungry and need a snack? Cracklin' Oat Bran.
Shortly after we lay down to go to sleep? Cracklin' Oat Bran.
Sometimes, even in the middle of the night, Cracklin' Oat Bran.

Last trip to Safeway, I picked up 3 boxes, because we always seem to run out. 3 boxes...who buys three boxes of cereal? Except me?

So...I am contemplating stock in Kellogg's. Cuz, apparently, even in this economic turndown, I will keep them in business.

Holy Crap

So...after actually talking to doulas...they get us really excited. Then, they give us the price.

Ouch.

What to Doula?

We've been discussing the possibility of having a doula in the labor room with us.

Why? you ask? Well...Shaundar is a pretty anxious person. She's never been through this and she's pretty scared about the whole labor thing. She stresses easy, and she has a low tolerance for pain.

Me...I distract easy and have patience issues.

So, we're discussing if it would be better to have a labor partner there to help us out.

For all of you relatives that just thought you could do it. No. If I can't do it, you can't do it.

Here are my immediate thoughts on a doula.
1) They are trained professionals who are specifically around to make you as comfortable and as stress free as possible.
2) They aren't cheap.
3) Everyone I have talked to that has used one LOVED it.
4) Doula is a funny word.

A lot of our interest in a doula centers around pain meds. Shaundar says that she wants to go natural, if at all possible. Of course, like I mentioned, she doesn't handle pain to well. She could tell me going in, "I don't want any meds." Then...7 hours into labor, if she goes, "GIVE ME THE [expletive] MEDS YOU STUPID PILE OF PUTRID PIG [expletive]!" I don't have to be the one to say No.

We're not positive we're going this route. I mean, to me...a doula seems like little more than a weight training partner. You know...the person behind you yelling, "Come on! One more push you sissy!" Only, you pay this woman a few hundred bucks.

There are lots of pros. Cons are that I am cheap. We're probably gonna do some interviews and see what happens next.
